About Mezzanines

Mezzanines have transformed the way businesses make the most of their environments. These effective structures introduce a new dimension to efficiency by capitalizing on the often-underutilized vertical space within industrial facilities and commercial spaces. By suspending a supplementary level above the existing floor, mezzanines instantly expand usable space without the hefty costs and time constraints associated with constructing new buildings or expanding outward.

They adapt to diverse needs, seamlessly transitioning between storage repositories, workspace extensions, or even elevated observation platforms. These structures cater to the specific requirements of businesses, allowing for customization that aligns with the complexities of their operations. From bustling warehouses optimizing inventory management to modern offices carving out innovative collaboration areas, mezzanines can be designed to accommodate it all, making them a cornerstone of versatile spatial design.

While enhancing practicality and aesthetics, mezzanines also champion safety and accessibility. Equipped with features like secure stairways, catwalks, guardrails, and gates, they ensure the well-being of employees navigating these elevated spaces. Moreover, mezzanines empower businesses to enhance their workflow efficiency. By segregating operations between the main floor and the mezzanine level, companies can streamline processes and minimize interference. In a world where efficient space management can make or break operational success, mezzanines rise as an essential solution, revolutionizing the way industries envision, expand, and engage with their spaces.

Benefits of Mezzanines

Mezzanines are elevated platforms that are installed within an existing warehouse or manufacturing facility to create additional floor space. Mezzanines are often used to maximize storage capacity, increase production capacity, or create additional office or workspaces. These platforms are typically made from structural steel and are designed to support heavy loads.

One of the primary benefits of industrial mezzanines is their ability to increase usable floor space without the need for a costly and time-consuming expansion of the facility. Mezzanines can be installed quickly and easily, and they can be customized to meet the specific needs of the facility. They are also a cost-effective solution for companies that need to add storage or production space but do not want to invest in a new facility or relocate to a larger space.

Another benefit of industrial mezzanines is their versatility. Mezzanines can be used for a variety of purposes, including storage, production, office space, and retail space. They can be designed to accommodate heavy equipment, conveyor systems, and other machinery. Mezzanines can also be customized with safety features such as guardrails, safety gates, and access points to ensure the safety of workers and visitors.

Mezzanines can also improve the efficiency of a facility by reducing the amount of time and energy required to move goods and equipment throughout the facility. Mezzanines can be designed to optimize the flow of materials, which can reduce bottlenecks and increase productivity. Mezzanines can also be integrated with other material handling equipment such as conveyors, lifts, and automated storage systems to create a seamless flow of materials throughout the facility.

In summary, industrial mezzanines offer a cost-effective and versatile solution for companies that need to increase their storage or production capacity. Mezzanines can be customized to meet the specific needs of the facility and can be designed to accommodate heavy equipment and machinery. They also offer safety features to protect workers and visitors and can optimize the flow of materials to increase efficiency and productivity.

American Surplus stocks the following used mezzanine manufacturers: Cogan, FS Industries, Burtman, Portafab, Wildeck, Steel King, Bluff, Cubic Design, SSI, and Panel Built Inc. mezzanines. Mezzanines may also be referred to as: Steel mezzanines, Free standing mezzanines, Prefab mezzanine system, Industrial platform, Free standing mezzanine kits, Modular mezzanine kits, Industrial mezzanines, Storage platforms, Industrial mezzanine systems, or Warehouse platforms.

There are numerous reasons you should consider a used mezzanine for your business. For example, mezzanines are a cost efficient way of utilizing the unused vertical space within your storage facility. A used mezzanine allows for increased storage capacity without increasing the square footage of your property. Additional square footage would mean additional property tax, but a used mezzanine would not be considered additional square footage for tax purposes.

Used mezzanines can be altered for your specific warehouse facility. We lay out your mezzanine with CAD drawings, ensuring that it is built correctly. Our professional sales team has sold many mezzanine systems in the past 30 years, and they will work with you to pick the most effective option for maximizing your storage space.

Mezzanines can also be expanded without starting from scratch, or building from the bottom up. With the proper thought, your mezzanine can grow with your business. ASI can install a used mezzanine or expand an existing one in as little as one day. This minimizes the amount of time the installation is disrupting daily activities within that facility.

As you can see above, there are many different styles of used mezzanines to choose from. Along with those options, there are also different types of flooring, stairs/laddersrailingssafety gates, and catwalks to choose from. Which of these you will utilize depends on your mezzanine, where it is located within your facility, and for what it is being used.

ASI currently utilizes several used mezzanines in our own storage facility in East Providence, RI. Our new office area is made of a used mezzanine with storage above, and we have another steel mezzanine for storage right next to one of our loading docks. As far as buying used material handling equipment goes, stick with ASI. We have been in the business of buying and selling quality used equipment for over 30 years, and our used mezzanines are inspected prior to shipment to ensure your satisfaction.

When purchasing a mezzanine from American Surplus Inc., we’ll offer our free Conceptual Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawing services to help with planning and layout. Ask your ASI sales associate today!

Advantages of Mezzanines

Mezzanines offer several advantages for businesses and industrial spaces looking to optimize their operations and space utilization:

  • Space Maximization: Mezzanines create additional floor space within an existing building, effectively doubling the usable area without the need for expansion or new construction.
  • Cost Efficiency: Constructing a new building or expanding a current one can be costly. Mezzanines provide a more economical way to increase space, often requiring fewer resources and construction time.
  • Customization: Mezzanines can be tailored to meet specific requirements, whether it's for storage, office space, manufacturing, or other operational needs. They are highly adaptable to different layouts and functionalities.
  • Vertical Utilization: Mezzanines utilize vertical space that might otherwise go unused. This is especially beneficial in industrial settings where high ceilings can be capitalized upon.
  • Flexibility: Mezzanines can be designed to be temporary or permanent structures, offering flexibility for changing business needs. They can also be disassembled and relocated if necessary.
  • Operational Efficiency: By adding storage or workspace at a higher level, mezzanines can optimize workflow and process efficiency by segregating different functions or operations within the same space.
  • Improved Organization: Mezzanines help in keeping the main floor clear and organized by relocating items, machinery, or personnel to the elevated level, reducing clutter, and enhancing safety.
  • Enhanced Safety: Safety features like catwalks, guardrails, gates, and properly designed stairways ensure the secure movement of employees, materials, and equipment between different levels.
  • Quick Installation: Compared to traditional construction, mezzanines can be installed relatively quickly, minimizing disruption to ongoing operations.
  • Compliance: Mezzanines can be designed to comply with safety regulations and building codes, ensuring a secure environment for workers, and meeting legal requirements.
  • Reduced Energy Consumption: Depending on the design, mezzanines can aid in temperature regulation by utilizing the natural airflow and heating patterns of the building, potentially reducing energy costs.
  • Investment Returns: The cost savings from not having to construct new buildings, coupled with the operational efficiencies gained, can lead to a solid return on investment over time.

Mezzanines & Mezzanine Add-On’s

When considering used industrial storage components like these, it's important to assess their condition, structural integrity, and compatibility with your specific operational needs. Proper installation, maintenance, and adherence to safety regulations are vital to ensure the effectiveness and safety of these systems.

  • Used Steel Mezzanines: Steel mezzanines are intermediate floors that are constructed within a building, providing additional space for storage or operational purposes. They are often used to maximize vertical space in industrial settings. Used steel mezzanines offer a cost-effective solution for businesses looking to expand their usable space without constructing new buildings.
  • Used Pallet Rack Mezzanines: Pallet rack mezzanines combine the concept of mezzanines with pallet racking systems. These systems allow for storage on both the ground level and the mezzanine level, providing efficient use of space. Used pallet rack mezzanines are a great choice for businesses needing to store palletized goods while optimizing their warehouse layout.
  • Used Shelf Supported Mezzanines: Shelf supported mezzanines incorporate shelves into their structure, allowing for storage both above and below the mezzanine. These mezzanines are designed to accommodate smaller items and are commonly used for organizing and storing various products in a compact and accessible manner.
  • Used Mezzanine Flooring: Mezzanine flooring refers to the surface of the intermediate level. It can be made from various materials, including steel grating, plywood, or other durable materials. Used mezzanine flooring is often customizable to suit the specific needs of a business, supporting the weight and requirements of the intended usage.
  • Used Mezzanine Catwalks: Mezzanine catwalks are elevated walkways that allow personnel to navigate and access different areas of the mezzanine. They contribute to the safety and accessibility of the mezzanine, especially in larger industrial spaces where mobility is crucial.
  • Used Mezzanine Gates: Mezzanine gates are entry points designed to control access to and from the mezzanine level. They ensure the safety of workers and prevent unauthorized access. Used mezzanine gates can include swing gates, sliding gates, and other designs that align with the specific layout and requirements of the mezzanine.
  • Used Mezzanine Stairways: Mezzanine stairways provide safe and convenient access between different levels of the facility. They are an essential component for complying with safety regulations and ensuring easy movement of personnel and equipment. Used mezzanine stairways come in various designs to match the mezzanine's layout.
  • Used Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor: A vertical reciprocating conveyor (VRC) is a lifting device that moves goods vertically between different levels. They are often used in conjunction with mezzanines to facilitate the efficient movement of materials, reducing the need for manual lifting and carrying. Used VRCs are a cost-effective way to enhance material handling processes.

Mezzanines Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best way to support my mezzanine?
A: Our team of specialists will be able to assist you in designing the most cost-effective way to support your mezzanine. Common solutions include structures created from a design containing a combination of: Beams, C- Section, Bar Joist, and Girder Joists. With our team of specialists we will be able to provide the best solution for your projects needs.

Q: How do I determine the best decking option for me?
A: We offer several decking options for a variety of needs and use cases. Below, we will list a few of our most popular options and some of their benefits.

  • Bar Grating: Bar Grating is a strong and reliable decking option which allows air and light to move through. Will your product be rolling on your mezzanine? This is something to consider as bar grating adds more resistance against pallet jacks and carts compared to other options.
  • Floor / Diamond Plate: Plating is a very safe and durable decking option that is sure to last. Manufactured from steel formed into a flat plate studded with a diamond tread, it provides a slip-resistant surface that carts and pallet jacks can roll across with ease.
  • Resin Deck: Resin Deck comes in a variety of different panel types and finishes which have different capacities, making these a versatile option. The flat surface of this style of decking ensures great ease for rolling product. This type of flooring is laid over a metal B-Deck and is typically the most worthwhile decking application.

Q: What does PSF mean?
A: PSF is an abbreviation for Pounds per Square Foot, and is a measurement of uniform load capacity across your mezzanine. A standard mezzanine will generally support 125 pounds per square foot (PSF), but a variety of different materials can be used to increase the overall PSF limit of your mezzanine, making it more capable of handling heavier loads. Design load is the load in PSF averaged over the entire surface rather than a single heavy area on the structure known as a point load. Knowing the difference is essential when designing a safe mezzanine.

Q: Can my slab support my mezzanine?
A: We do not evaluate the capabilities of your current slab. However, we are able to provide loading information to an engineer of your choice to help determine whether your slab can support your mezzanine or if new footings are required.

Q: Is there a minimum clear height for my mezzanine?
A: The minimum clear height under a mezzanine is usually at least 7'. This is also the same clear height between the decking of the mezzanine and the ceiling of your warhouse. Items to take into account when determining the clear height include positioning of lighting, sprinklers, and other obstructions in addition to any other items of concern as your jurisdiction evaluates.

Q: Questions our sales team may review with you include:
A: Here are some questions to ask our sales team:

  • What is the structure being used for?
  • What will be on top of the structure?
