About Order Pickers

A manual pallet jack, also known as a hand pallet truck or hand truck, is a simple yet effective tool used to move pallets of goods in a warehouse, factory, or retail environment. It consists of a set of forks that can be slid under a pallet, a hydraulic lifting mechanism, and a handle for steering and maneuvering the jack.

Using a manual pallet jack is relatively straightforward. The operator slides the forks under the pallet and then pumps the handle up and down to raise the pallet off the ground. Once the pallet is lifted, the operator can steer the pallet jack to the desired location and lower the pallet by releasing the hydraulic valve.

Order picker forklifts utilize a platform that raises with the forks for the operator to stand on. The platform raises the operator into the air, so they can pick or stock with better accuracy. The platform also doubles as a picking/stocking platform while being utilized as the operator’s driving cab. An order picker is a great machine for a warehouse or distribution center that’s trying to find inventory in a time-effective manner. They allow you to skip the tedious and time-consuming process of loading and unloading heavy pallets as you would have to with a forklift.

Confidently carry heavy products across long distances with a used order picker forklift. ASI has used order picker forklifts in a variety of styles from different manufacturers including Raymond and Crown. Each used forklift is inspected prior to shipment.

The forks are integrated with the platform, and there are safety features that prevent the operator from moving the order picker while picking products. Often this is a dead man’s switch, which cuts the power if the operator has not activated it. There are also safety harnesses that keep the operator safe while working on the platform.

American Surplus is constantly buying every variety of used forklift and forklift batteries that are in good resalable condition. We have a full-time forklift technician that goes through each machine individually and replaces any worn or damaged components. The used forklift will leave our shop looking brand new with a fresh paint job and new decals. Give us a call today; our sales staff would be more than happy to find the right order picker or forklift for your application. We will provide solutions to your material handling problems or concerns, guaranteed.

Advantages of Order Pickers

Order pickers, also known as order selectors or stock pickers, are specialized material handling equipment used in warehouses and distribution centers. They offer many advantages that contribute to efficient and effective order fulfillment processes. Here are some advantages of order pickers:

  • Vertical Reach: Order pickers are designed to reach heights significantly higher than traditional forklifts or pallet jacks. They can elevate the operator along with the load, enabling them to access items stored on high shelves or racks. This vertical reach capability maximizes the use of vertical space in the warehouse, increasing storage capacity and overall productivity.
  • Selective Picking: Order pickers allow operators to pick individual items or specific SKUs  from various locations within the warehouse. They offer flexibility in accessing products stored at different heights and positions, ensuring accurate and efficient order fulfillment. Selective picking reduces the need for unnecessary movement and improves picking accuracy, ultimately enhancing customer satisfaction.
  • Narrow Aisle Maneuverability: Order pickers are often designed with a compact and narrow profile, allowing them to navigate through tight spaces and narrow aisles. Compared to traditional forklifts, which require wider aisles for operation, order pickers optimize space utilization by requiring narrower aisle widths. This can result in increased storage capacity and reduced infrastructure costs.
  • Operator Comfort and Safety: Order pickers are designed with operator comfort and safety in mind. They typically feature ergonomic controls, adjustable platforms, and operator-friendly interfaces, ensuring a comfortable working environment. Additionally, safety features such as guardrails, anti-slip surfaces, and advanced stability systems are integrated to minimize the risk of accidents or injuries during operation.
  • Increased Efficiency and Productivity: By combining the advantages mentioned above, order pickers contribute to improved efficiency and productivity in warehouse operations. The ability to access products at various heights, navigate narrow aisles, and perform selective picking streamlines the order fulfillment process, reducing travel time and improving throughput. This efficiency translates into faster order processing, shorter lead times, and ultimately, higher customer satisfaction.
  • Reduced Equipment Damage: Order pickers are designed to handle delicate or fragile products with care. They often feature specialized attachments like clamp mechanisms or cushioned forks to secure and protect the products during picking and transportation. This reduces the risk of product damage, ensuring that items arrive at their destination in excellent condition.
  • Cost Savings: While order pickers may require an initial investment, they can lead to significant cost savings in the long run. The increased efficiency and productivity result in faster order processing, reducing labor costs associated with order fulfillment. Moreover, the optimized use of vertical space and narrower aisles can minimize warehouse expansion or relocation costs.

Order Pickers Applications

Order pickers find applications in various industries and warehouse environments where efficient order fulfillment and inventory management are crucial. Here are some common applications for order pickers:

  • Warehousing and Distribution Centers: Order pickers are extensively used in large-scale warehouses and distribution centers to facilitate the picking and packing of products for outgoing orders. They enable operators to access items stored at different heights and positions, ensuring accurate and efficient order fulfillment.
  • E-commerce Fulfillment: With the rise of e-commerce, order pickers have become indispensable in fulfillment centers that handle online orders. These facilities often require fast and accurate picking of individual items from a vast inventory. Order pickers enable operators to navigate through narrow aisles and reach items at various heights, streamlining the fulfillment process.
  • Retail Stores: Order pickers are utilized in retail environments, particularly in large stores or outlets with multi-level shelving systems. They help store employees to retrieve materials quickly and easily from high racking, ensuring that items are available for display or replenishment.
  • Manufacturing Facilities: Manufacturing plants and assembly lines often have warehouses or storage areas where components, raw materials, and finished goods are stored. Order pickers are used to efficiently retrieve and transport these items to the production line, reducing downtime and improving workflow.
  • Wholesale and Distribution Operations: Wholesale distributors and suppliers rely on order pickers to fulfill orders for their customers. Order pickers enable efficient picking and loading of products onto delivery trucks, ensuring timely and accurate shipments to retailers, businesses, and other customers.
  • Cold Storage and Temperature-Controlled Environments: Some order pickers are designed for use in cold storage facilities or temperature-controlled environments such as food processing or pharmaceutical warehouses. These order pickers have specialized features such as insulated cabins or cold-resistant components to withstand low temperatures and ensure safe and efficient operations in these environments.
  • Inventory Management and Stock Rotation: Order pickers can also be used for inventory management tasks, such as stock rotation and cycle counting. They allow operators to access and move products within the warehouse, ensuring that older stock is picked first and maintain accurate inventory levels.
  • Order Consolidation and Cross-Docking: In logistics operations that involve order consolidation or cross-docking, order pickers play a crucial role. They help operators efficiently pick items from various inbound shipments and consolidate them into outbound orders or transfer them to different areas of the warehouse for further processing.
