About Dock Boards

The main aspects to consider when choosing dock equipment is capacity, width, and length.

Capacity is the most important factor to consider when deciding between a dock plate or a dock board. The first question to consider is whether you will be using lift equipment to transport product out of the truck. This will automatically require a dock board due to capacity requirements and the need for side guard rails. To decide which capacity of dock board is required, add together the weight of the lift equipment and the maximum load weight of that equipment. If your forklift weighs 7,000 lbs. and has a 4,000 lbs. capacity, you should consider a board that holds at least 11,000 lbs.

In manual applications, the width of the dock plate or dock board should be at least 8'' inches wider than the overall width of the equipment. For powered operations, the width should be at least 16'' wider than the overall width of the equipment.

The proper length is determined by the height difference between the loading dock and the floor of the truck. This equipment has a maximum height differential, so a longer board can accommodate a greater range of height differences. Exceeding this angle will potentially dislodge the safety leg holding it in place, allowing it to shift and become unstable.

Every used dock board that leaves our warehouse is inspected prior to shipment to ensure that only the highest quality used equipment reaches our customers. Contact a member of our sales team to learn more about our current inventory of used dock plates, as well as our full selection of used dock equipment

Advantages of Dock Boards

Dock boards are convenient platforms that are used to bridge the gap between a loading dock and a truck or trailer. Here are some benefits of using dock boards:

  • Added safety: Dock boards can help prevent accidents and injuries by providing a stable and secure surface for loading and unloading cargo. They can also reduce the risk of tripping and falling by creating a smooth transition between the dock and the truck.
  • Economical: Dock boards are a cost-effective solution for small and medium-sized businesses that do not have a permanent loading dock. They are much less expensive than installing a permanent dock and can be easily moved and stored when not in use.
  • Adaptable: Dock boards are available in a variety of sizes, materials, and weight capacities, making them suitable for a wide range of loading and unloading applications. They can be used with different types of vehicles, including trucks, trailers, and forklifts.
  • Simple to use: Dock boards are lightweight and easy to handle, making them simple to move and position as needed. They can also be quickly installed and removed, which helps to reduce loading and unloading times.
  • Durability: Dock boards are typically made from heavy-duty materials such as steel or aluminum, which makes them strong and durable. They can withstand heavy loads and frequent use without suffering damage or wear and tear.

Applications for Dock Boards

Dock boards are flexible loading and unloading platforms that can be used in an array of applications. Here are some common applications for dock boards:

  • Warehousing and Distribution: Dock boards are commonly used in warehouses and distribution centers to bridge the gap between a loading dock and a truck or trailer. They provide a stable and secure surface for workers to load and unload goods.
  • Manufacturing: Dock boards are also used in manufacturing facilities to move raw materials and finished products between the dock and trucks or trailers. They can be used with forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Retail: Retail stores use dock boards to receive shipments of goods, such as furniture, appliances, and large equipment. Dock boards allow for easy and efficient unloading of these items from trucks and trailers.
  • Construction: Dock boards are often used in construction sites to transport heavy equipment, such as bulldozers and cranes, from one location to another. They provide a sturdy and reliable platform for moving these items safely and efficiently.
  • Agriculture: Farmers and agricultural businesses use dock boards to load and unload livestock, such as cattle and horses, onto trucks and trailers. They provide a secure and stable surface for animals to walk on, reducing the risk of injury.
