Teardrop warehouse racking is a very common style of roll formed racking. It is called “teardrop” because the holes in the teardrop upright frames are shaped like a tear drop. Teardrop beams are held in place by clips instead of bolts, making it faster to assemble and disassemble than bolted styles of pallet racking. Teardrop is a type of selective pallet rack because you can access every pallet.
Pallets in selective racking systems are only stored one deep, so every inventory item can be accessed at any time. This makes for quicker retrieval of inventory, but it also means less dense storage than other styles of racking like drive in or push back. These styles are denser because they utilize depth for storage, storing pallets 4-6 deep, so the whole system requires less rows. Each row is valuable space that could have been used for storage, and selective rack requires the highest number of rows.
Inventory items in drive in or drive through rack cannot be accessed until the pallets in front of it are taken down. Selective rack is better for the applications where you have unique inventory items on each pallet load, whereas racks that utilize depth in storage should have like items because being selective is not an option.
